This sound and light installation were set up at Kuni Shrine in Kyoto Prefecture, using the Sandou or the holy path from the Torii gate to the main shrine.
In the Shinto religion, there are many gods and it is believed that the gods use this special path to go between our world and theirs. As we walk this path, there are things that exist which are visible or invisible to us.
With this installation, I wanted to express the existence and the afterglow that have been created by people, animals, and gods who have walked this same path in years gone by.
When visitors walked on the Sandou, the stone lanterns on each side of the path would light up and fade out as they passed by.
The Kehai or presence of the visitor was expressed by the brightness and the Yoin or afterglow was expressed by the dimming.
